Your brain runs on rhythm. Billions of neurons fire in loose, collective waves, and the speed of those waves tracks what you're doing — racing when you're alert, slowing as you relax, slowest in dreamless sleep. Brainwave entrainment is the attempt to lead that rhythm on purpose, using sound.
The trick: a beat that isn't there
Play a 100 Hz tone into your left ear and a 104 Hz tone into your right, and something odd happens. You don't hear two tones. You hear one tone with a slow, pulsing throb — four pulses per second — that no microphone in the room could pick up. It exists only inside your head, where the brainstem combines the two signals and perceives their difference: 104 − 100 = 4 Hz. That perceived pulse is a binaural beat.
The phenomenon was first described by the physicist Heinrich Wilhelm Dove in 1839, and brought to a wide audience by biophysicist Gerald Oster in a 1973 Scientific American article that reframed binaural beats as a tool for studying the brain. The key point Oster stressed: the beat is a neurological event, not an acoustic one — which is exactly why it needs headphones, one tone per ear.
From a beat to a brain-state
Perceiving the pulse is step one. The bigger claim is the frequency-following response: that if you hold attention on a steady rhythm, the brain's own electrical activity tends to drift toward that same frequency — the way you unconsciously fall into step with a walking partner, or a room ends up clapping in time. Lead the beat slowly downward, the hypothesis goes, and you can coax the whole system down with it.
Two honest qualifiers travel with that idea. The following is easiest to measure with fast, strong rhythmic stimulation, and gets harder to pin down the slower and gentler the signal. And "drifting toward" a frequency is a tendency, not a switch — how far the brain follows depends heavily on how relaxed and attentive you are. Think of it as an invitation the brain can accept or ignore, not a remote control.
The bands you move through

Why the glide matters
A jarring jump in frequency breaks the spell — the brain notices the edit and snaps back to attention. So instead of stepping the beat from 13 Hz to 6 Hz, we ramp it continuously, in thousands of tiny sample-accurate increments, so it never audibly stair-steps. A layer of soft pink noise rounds off the edges further. The result is one unbroken descent you can sink into rather than track.
What's solid, and what's still open
Entrainment sits in an honest middle ground: not fringe, not settled. Some pieces are on firm footing; others are genuinely unresolved, and we'd rather tell you which is which than flatten it into a slogan.
None of that is a reason to dismiss it. It's a reason to hold it lightly: a real, well-documented perceptual effect, wrapped around a state shift that varies a lot from person to person and session to session. The most reliable ingredient in every study is the same one you control — a quiet room and steady attention.
The research on entrainment is real but mixed. Studies have reported effects on relaxation, anxiety, attention and mood — and others have found little. Effects are usually modest, vary a lot between people, and depend on attention and expectation. Treat this as a powerful aid to relaxation and focus, not a guaranteed switch — and never as medicine.

Do I really need headphones?
For binaural beats, yes — the effect only exists when each ear receives its own tone, so the brainstem can combine them. On speakers the two tones mix in the air and the illusion collapses. The two alternatives are the workaround: monaural and isochronic beats are real, measurable pulses, so they work fine through speakers. How soon will I feel something?
Often within a few minutes you'll notice a settling — slower breath, a looser jaw, the sense of the room going quiet. But it varies, and some sessions land softly rather than dramatically. Chasing a big effect tends to prevent it; the state arrives when you stop reaching for it. Attention matters far more than effort.
What if I fall asleep?
Common, and completely fine — it usually means the descent did its job on a tired nervous system. Nothing is lost. If staying present is the goal, listen sitting up rather than lying down, and pick a time of day when you're rested rather than depleted.
Which method should I choose — binaural, monaural, or isochronic?
If you have headphones and want the smoothest, most immersive descent, use binaural. If you're on speakers, or you want a beat you can feel more distinctly, try monaural or the sharper isochronic. The free-form Studio lets you switch between all three and trust your own ears.
